Players are now using Maple bats. They used to use ash or oak bats which are not as hard as maple. The harder the bat the less flexible the bat is.

Also, players shave the bat more down near the handle so they are much more top heavy, which will allow them to generate more bat speed. Since the handles are thinner they tend to break much more frequently.
