Someone very fast can actually get on base by bunting; especially if it is a surprise. Also, if a player tries to lay down a bunt every once in a while - it tends to pull the infield in. And with the infield in, you have a better chance of getting it thru the infield when you swing away.

You can get a great psychological advantage by doing anything that's unexpected. With the infield playing out with a slugger at bat, what could be more unexpected than a bunt with nobody on?

First, I agree wholeheartedly with the psychological advantage. Second, if you have a speedy batter without power who can beat out a bunt, it can demoralize the infield defense. It also can leave them guessing what you will do next.

Because if the 3rd baseman is playing back, and not expecting the bunt, you can catch him off guard if you get the ball past the pitcher. If that happens the 3rd baseman has to charge in, pick up the ball bare-handed and make a quick throw to first.

You take the risk of being thrown out at first, however you also have the chance of beating the throw, and/or having the 3rd baseman throw wild, in which case even if that doesn't get you down to second base, it can with the other team's psyche and can open the door for a big inning.

You bunt with no one on to get a base hit. It's becoming a lost art. Ichiro Suzuki and Juan Pierre are two of the best at bunting for base hits. Even when the first and third basemen are in, they can still get bunt hits.

If you have decent speed and are in a slump. It may be a way of getting on base when struggling. The above answers are good.

To be the tying run on late in the game against a guy that's tough to hit. Ben Davis did this to Randy Johnson, and broke up his precious little no-hitter one night. Ha, ha! Ben did it to become the tying run, and all the D-Backs--like Bob Brenly, Curt Schilling, and others with room-temperature IQs--got mad and called Davis names. It was great--I loved it. :)
Also, to extend a personal hitting streak.
Most players can't bunt to save their own lives, which is why it is so fun to see someone do it.
