Even for a life long Reds fan, it's tough to say. Rose supporters would like to believe he honestly didn't bet on the Reds and would have managed them like he played for them: full throttle.But as Rose as shown marginal contrition and an unwillingness to give immediate, full, honest disclosure about everything he was involved in, I sometimes worry about how his character issues could have short circuited that team's chances of success.
Knowing what we do now about his character, what would have stopped him from taking a dive in the WS for a huge payoff? The man had significant debts and eventually ended up in prison for tax evasion. He was no stranger to the love of money.
As to Rose assembling the team Pinella managed, I agree Lou was given a nice package to work with. But just have the right tools is not enough. There are loads of examples in sports of teams that should have won it all but inexplicably failed. Then, the right manager comes in and using the pieces in place is able to get them to play at or above their potential.
The situation Lou walked into was tumultuous and he kept the team together and on track to win it all. That's his ring. Not Rose's.
