No the Kansas City Royals are 2nd to last in the American League in attendance. Right behind the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. It's ashame because some of the people I've talked to that have been to Kauffman Stadium say it's the best park they've been to. Even more impressed with it than Oriole Park at Camden Yards. THEY ARE POPULAR ONLY BECAUSE THEY SUCK AND EVERY OTHER TEAM THAT PLAYS THEM LIKES TO BEAT THEM. AND THEY HAVE AVERAGE ATTENDANCE.Yes, back in the day. Right now, as we speak they are still horrible and they don't draw real well. Until they start winning like their division rival Tigers, they won't draw much unless the Yanks or BoSox come to town. They have a great park though.
The KC Royals have only had 1 winning season in well over a decade. The last time they where in the playoffs was in 1985 when they won the world series against the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals.
So if you look at the success of the ballclub in recent years? Do you really think that factors into the being a popular team. I highly doubt it, rarely does Kauffman Stadium sell out, and from my experience of actually going to Kauffman Stadium for an Orioles game against KC (back in 04), even some of the die-hard Royals fans I found are pessamistic about the status of the ballclub.
I don't imagine much has changed fan opinion since the Royals still are among the bottom dwellers of the AL this year.

Yes the Royals are a popular team ..but with mostly people in there late 40's 50's and 60's. Im from there and I dont think the royals will ever make the playoffs in my lifetime. Plus the fans here in K.C are mostly Chiefs fans !Why do baseball games always start at 5 minutes after the hour?
They dont suck. they just dont have any major players because they cant afford big players like the angels, red sox and the yankees can. the attendence isnt good at all. its so bad that they have dollar days where everything from drinks, to food, to tickets(all over the stadium) cost $1.00.I do not live in, nor have I been to, Kansas City.
The Royals in the late 1970's and 1980's were one of the most popular in baseball when they had players such as George Brett, Bret Saberhagen, Hal McRae, Willie Wilson, Dan Quisenberry, et al. Whether its because the owners didn't want to pay free agents, or the market just does not have enough money to support big spending, the Royals right after the 1994 strike have been almost a non-factor. Their attendance was near the top of the AL during that period 25-30 years ago, and now is in the bottom tier near Tampa Bay. It could be a very good franchise because Kansas City is a great sports town- they love the Cheifs. The right management team needs to put a roster on the field that can win a few games once in a while.

I have followed the Royals since 1976. To everyone else, we must look as low as you can go, but there are many reasons to be optimistic. Hiring GM Dayton Moore was a start. We have young kids acquired through trades like Mark Teahen and John Buck who are starting to pay off. Alex Gordon had everybody talking, but has struggled so far. Billy Butler is waiting in the wings if they can find a place to play him. Things are going in the right direction. Plus, there are big stadium improvements coming soon.
