In general, the balls are called 'soft balls' because despite feeling hard, they are intentionally manufactured to not be as dense as the traditional baseball. These softer, lower density balls can't be smashed out of a ballpark as easily. Their larger design means they are less aerodynamic, so they catch more wind which creates more drag or 'wind resistance' and do not travel as far.Outdoor softballs are made a little harder so they are protected from the elements, moisture especially.
Hope that helps!
