Help with some baseball terms?
Question:Okay, pretty much I've been asked to work the scoreboard for my school's baseball games. I know the basics, ball, strike, foul, and run. What is a hit? Is it just when they hit the ball, and does it count if the hit ball is caught? And what is an error exactly? thanks

What is "hitting for the cycle" in baeball?
Think they are plenty of answers defining the difference between hit and error. However, think your question pertains to the scoreboard. The official scorer usually makes a determination on an questionable fielding play whether or not it is a hit or error. This helps the fans score along w/the official scorer. If you are just running the scoreboard, I would not even bother with that unless the official scorer is sitting next to you. Enjoy the game.A hit is when the batter hits the ball and reaches base safely...meaning the ball is not caught and he is not out in anyway. He stays on first base (or whatever base he makes it to).
An error is when a player SHOULD have been out but the defensive player basically makes a mistake. If he should have caught the ball and drops it, it's an error. The batter doesn't get a hit like he normally would when reaching base, but he does get to stay on base.
Hope that helps!
How will the twins do this year?
a hit is when the batter hits the ball without getting out. types of hits include a single, double, triple, home run, etc. If the ball is caught its not a hit, its an out., and an error is when a fielder misses the play. like, if a ground ball is hit to the shortstop and the ball hits off his glove. In Little League Baseball, after you hit the ball and running to first, can you slide into 1st?
what, were you asked to be the scorekeeper because you are hot?good grief!
Is it free for my 3 year old son to get into a Cubs game or do I have to buy a ticket?
A hit is when the batter hits the ball into play and reaches base safely. A home run also counts as a hit. But there are a few exceptions. If the runner reached base safely because the defense threw out another batter then it would be considered a fielder's choice and not counted as a hit. If the batter reached base safely because the defense misplayed the ball - either dropped it or overthrew the target, then it would be scored as an error and the batter isn't credited with a hit.A player is charged with an error when they screw up a play that should have been made with ordinary effort. In other words the ball is hit right at them and they drop it or they overthrow the baseman. If a player misses/drops a ball they were diving to catch it usually wouldn't be scored as an error. When a player is charged with an error the batter is not credited with a hit - unless the player would have been safe and an error allowed him to advance an extra base.
Also, when a run scores as a result of an error - even if the error wasn't on the same play as the run was scored - then that run is scored as an unearned run and does not count against the pitcher.

Watch the umpires for your scoring cues. The plate umpire (the one behind the catcher) will call balls and strikes. You'll know it is a strike when he holds up his right hand in a fist. He should also, during the course of the 'at bat' hold up fingers for balls and strikes. Left hand fingers show balls, right hand shows strikes.Watch the field umpires(s) to see if a hit ball is fair, foul, or an out. They will also indicate outs with a right-fisted motion of some sort. If a player returns to the dugout rather than staying on base, it's an out.
Just relax. If you don't know, ask someone there. There's a reset button on the control box for a reason. Have fun.
Name a pitcher, who in his 1st Major League @ bat hit a home run as a pinch hitter?
A hit is when a batter gets on base.An error is made by a fielder. It's a judgment call by the scoreoboard operater, which is you. Basically, if the guy messes up an easy play, it's an error. If the batter would have been safe even if the fielder would have cleanly gotten the ball ,it should be a hit. It's up to your judgment.
If a ball is struck in the air and caught on the fly it IS NOT A HIT. It is an out.
Good luck, have fun!!
