the manager plays a huge role in baseball.he is the one who sets the lineup, decides who will be batting where and decides who will be playing where on the field.it is up to the manager to set up the best lineup he can everygame..it is also up to the manager to set up the pitching rotation, that plays a huge role in baseball...he must decide when to pull a pitcher and what pitcher he is going to bring in...its also the same we the players on the field.its up to the manager to decide what player fits best with what situation they are in.there is so much more the manager actually does in baseball...i could go on forever..The manager doesn't have the impact a football coach does, but they still impact the game in a big way. The call for substititutions, hit and runs, bunts, postition fielders, and some even call the pitches from the dugout. It may not be a visible as what a football coach does during a game, but make no mistake managers can have a huge impact on any given game during the season.
It seems as though they don't b/c they are rarely seen on screen doing anything but sitting on the bench unless they get in a fight with the ump. But, they really control the tempo of the game. They call every pitch out and pick off in attempt to control the run game, they set the defense, call any hit and run, bunt, steal, and take. Most fans would know when to pinch hit, change pitchers, and what line up to set, but not how to control a game. Game control is what being a manager is all about.

Yeah he has no influence on the game. Teams pay him to just stand there. It's not like he chooses the lineup, decides when to pinch hit or pinch run and who to have pinch hit or run, when to get the bullpen started, when to take out a pitcher and when not to take out a pitcher, which pitcher to face which hitter, when to steal, when not to steal, when to call the hit and run, double steal, bunt, geez I could go on forever. Managers in baseball can play a big role not just in motivating and stuff but also in decisions, especially when it comes to managing the pitching staff and knowing when to go or not go (ahem Sam friggin Perlozzo) to the bullpen.Case in point today the Orioles manager cost them the game because he took out the starter who was pitching great for no reason. Ugh.
But you're right they don't have as much influence as in football. I think basketball coaches don't have as much influence aside from substitutions and occasionally setting up plays.
