The stories of Abner Doubleday inventing the game in Cooperstown, NY in 1839 have very little solid evidence backing them up. In fact, Doubleday was at West Point in 1839. Evidence leading to doubt of these stories outweighs evidence supporting them.
Baseball is really a game that developed over time from older games, with no precise date of invention. Cartwright's 1845 rules presented a game very different from that of the modern-day game; these rules evolved over decades.
For example, overhand pitching was not seen in baseball until the 1880s. Until the late 1860s, fielders could catch the ball on one bounce to record an out. At various times, the number of strikes for a strikeout and the number of balls a walk varied. By the turn of the century, the game had evolved into the game we see now. The last major change in the game to make it the game we know today was in 1900, when the first pentagon-shaped home plate was used. Of course, there was the introduction of the designated hitter rule in December 1972.
In essence, baseball was evolved, not invented; and it continues to evolve. Bat-and-ball games had existed for a long time, and these games became the roots of the game that we now call baseball.
