Who just saw the Cubs blow it in the 9th against the Mets?

Question:What is wrong with the Cubs? How do they blow a 4 run lead in the 9th? I'm a lifetime Cubs fan and want to know your theories on why the Cubs lose for such petty reasons.

Please only serious and thoughtful answers. I know it's sports1234.com and some low-life, junior-varsity of our society types will be tempted to write cheap/mindless replys. Please don't as the joke is only on you if you do.

What's the best book about sabermetrics?

Though I don't particularly like the Cubs myself, I can truly sympathize with you as a Cubs fan. If anything can go wrong for a team, it seems to do so for the Cubs. From the previous incidents in the early 1900s to the Bartman incident, you have seen it all, and my heart truly goes out to you all.

I truly can't understand their run of bad luck even though I understand the game very well - having been in the game at many levels in many capacities for nearly thirty years. At this point, I truly wonder if it isn't becoming a mind set these days, sort of like a "We're the Cubs, so things will go wrong" attitude that actually manifests itself on the field in the strangest of ways. I don't mean to sound flippant because you deserve a straight answer and asked for it, so here goes my take on things in Cubsville:

It is sort of like all of the self-improvement books out there: "If you visualize yourself in a penthouse surrounded by Cadillacs and lovely girls, you are on your way to achieving that dream" or "if you think of yourself as a loser, that is what you will be" type of scenario. This might sound harsh, but I truly think that the mindset of the Cubs as "Lovable Losers" has permeated the organization from the groundskeepers to the players to the management to the fans, and that it is truly going to take a pennant or World Series championship to get them over the hump - a very vicious circle - to be sure. They need to think positively to win, but in order to win, they need to think positively - a catch 22.

It seems the only thing that can take place to achieve this turnaround is to examine the organization logically: For instance, what is wrong in the on-the-field training methods that seems to be conducive to so many injuries? Let's face it - if the pitching had remained healthy in the names of Woods, etc, they would have most likely won something by now. Is it just dumb luck they have seen so many pitching injuries in the past years, or is it because of inadequate preparation? The same can be said for the Yankees. And in which direction does management need to go to turn things around? Do they adopt the former Yankees' policy of paying top dollar to bring in accomplished, superstar players to give them a decided advantage? Well..one needs to look only at the Yankees to see the holes in that theory. Or do they attempt to grow their own players AND KEEP THEM rather than trade them away? It's a real quandry.

All I can say is this: They need to keep Lou Pinella as their manager, and let him have a deciding vote on whom they acquire, develop, or trade away - literally decide who can help them in the future and who won't. IF THEY GIVE HIM TIME, he will turn things around in a very positive way, and eventually - maybe two to three years down the line, your Cubs will be solid for the first time in a long time...

Wish I could be positive for this year and maybe the next, but I think the foundation needs to be built up just a little more, and your lovable losers will become a National League powerhouse...

How can I listen or watch the yankees games online without paying $$?

Didnt see it but it doesnt suprise me. They have blown so many games this season and their bullpen has an ERA of about 4.00 which is terrible and you cant expect to win with a bull pen like that.

What team or teams in your opinion have been the biggest disappointment in the past five years? And why?

I was listening to it on the radio at work. I LOVED IT MAN!

The Cubs bullpen is awful. Scott Eyre and Ryan Dempster are both terrible and they were way overmatched by the Mets hitters!!

LETS GO METS!!

Who's worse, the Cardinals or the Nationals?

Sorry about that i am a die hard Met fan, but its your bull pen. Plus Pinella doesn't have the patients to leave his starter in long enough to finish it out. He isn't a picther friendly coach.

Any San Diego Padres Fans out there? Answer me this...?

Cubs?? Is that a little league team!!

White Sox are the only baseball team in Chi-Town

Who do you think has the best batting stance?

to me why did Pinella put in Dempster? Ohman got the got all the batters he faced out with out trouble..once Dempster loaded the bases i would of brung someone else in it was to late when changed pitchers..I am also a life time cub fan ..and Santo was going nuts on the radio...it seemed like lately Dempster has not been throwing the ball like he did last year ..he is thinking to much before he throws...

Who will win today between orioles and red sox?

Their front office stinks. They hold on to injured players too long. They're ballgark is a pitchers park some days and a hitters park others, because it's hard to adjust to the changing winds. Their fans aren't knowledgeable, and they have a woe is me attitude instead of demanding more out of their franchise that plays in such a big market.

Who do you think will be the 2007 MLB All-Star MVP?

The Cubs were just playing against the best team in the National League, and perhaps in all of baseball with the Red Sox as their main competetion

The New York Mets are the toughest team to beat in baseball cause they keep coming back, and are always giving a tough time especially in the 9th.. Last season for example the Cards had a 7-0 lead into the 5th i believe...and the mets climbed right back up and won in the 9th after a Beltran homerun.Unfortunately this didn't happen in the NLCS, but stuff happens, but the NYM are probably the best team in MLB... Tommorow they play the Yankees, who are reallly, really struggling.. I think if the Yankees can't take 2 out 3, then I think they are on their way to a losing season!

Do you think us baseball fans are more brutal than football/basketball fans?

I guess this may be cheap and mindless, I'm just saying I don't get it either! What the hell is their problem? I don't know how they do crap like this! I really wish I had something to offer, it just sucks so bad!! Was Tuesday just a fluke? I hope we rock the socks off the Sox this weekend!

Do you think last year's MVP voting was wack? howard and mourneau..did they deserve it?

Because they are owned by the Tribune Company who could care less abt baseball. They only care about making money and unfortunately, the cubs are one of the few franchises in all of sports (yankees being another one) that doesnt have to win to make money. At least the yankees have an owner who will do whatever it takes to win, this, however, is not true for the cubs. Hopefully, for cubs fans (im a mets fan -- so i would normally feel your pain but not today) the sale will go through ASAP and you can get back to winning being a priority.

Wich player have played for cubs and brewers?

It is just the Pitching. I hope it was just a bad day and that our pitcher will just start pitching better.

Can the St. Louis Cardinals make the playoffs?

LOL, The Mets the Team in NL, not the Cubs, What do you think was going to happen.

What are some guarantee picks you think for tomorrow's MLB games?

It's the curse! just kidding. i think that their team looks pretty good on paper but i just don;t know either

What year did they stop using the bull pen carts to delievery the new pitcher?

The Cubs have a better team than their record indicates. It seems like this year has been one heartbreaker after another. I think Ohman should have stayed in the game today as he was doing extremely well. He had struck out 4 men in 2 innings.just leave him in.
The Cubs need a good showing vs. the Sox this weekend. Hopefully this loss will put a much needed spark into the cubs players/managers that just hasn't been there this season.

The Cubs are losing not just because of any one aspect of the team. They are not scoring any runs in extra innings, they are losing most one run games(when the pen pitched well), and the bullpen can't hold on when they need to(when the bats are on). Fortunately for the Cubs it is still May. If this team can start making plays when it counts, they will win and win often.

GO CUBBIES!!

Jersey Numbers?

Look - as a White Sox fan who does not hate the Cubs - the only thing I can tell you is you have no closer. Dempster looked good for the first month, but has looked like the Dempster of last year recently. If you want to win, you need to ditch him now. And it is apparent to everyone that Scott Eyre is not good. He has lost it. Howry also has problems. Is this a result of age? Over-use? Who knows. But this bullpen has big issues. Seeing Cotts struggle last night should concern you too.
Don't listen to the mindless babble of Ron Santo. This bullpen has big problems. Time for Lou to listen to himself and see what is down on the farm. I know Marmol has been pitching good in Iowa. Call him up. Rocky Cherry pitched good. But he was sent down. Call him back. He was decent.
If you don't fix the bullpen now, your season will be over before the June Swoon can happen.

MLB rule on visiting pitcher's mound (pre 1960's)?

The Mets have a lot of drive and fight this year, and it was a tough game for everybody... after that long night last night and the rain. i think everybody wanted to rest. The cubs really gave it a good shot and really won the game. it was really up to the closer. the filders and hitters and catcher won, and the pitch lost. You can think of it like that.
