a relief pitcher is any pitcher who isnt a starter. Relief pitchers have different roles. Some are closers, some are long relief, middle relief, setup men. In baseball pools, you want to look for closers, many of teh other types wont get you much. Look up stats and box scores, and a closer will have multiple saves, as designated by an S.

What is a walk off homerun?

Was there at one time an all African American baseball team?

yes, it stands for relief pitcher

Do you believe in superstitions?

Any pitcher not a starter is a relief pitcher, they could be middle relief or a closer.

Vernon Wells At-Bat Song?! ANYONE!?

usually CL is associated with a closing pitcher. RP just means relief pitcher and refers to pretty much anyone that doesn't start. MR is middle reliever, SP is starting pitcher, SU is the set up pitcher which comes in right before the closer.

Where can I find old films of Rudy Fernandez?

RP can mean any relief pitcher. Some pools will list them by expected roles (MR - Middle Relief, LR - Long Relief, SU - Set-up man, CL - Closer), but many pools do not.

You will have to look at the depth charts for the individual teams to find out who the closers are. Sorting by saves is a quick way to find the obvious ones, the others may take some digging...

Good luck in your pool!

When did Cubs fans lose their class?

Well typically RP stands for Relief Pitcher... and yes, if a team doesn't have a designated closer, then a relief pitcher can come in and do the job.

For instance... Brad Lidge of the Astros lost the closer's role...now, Dan Wheeler closes...BUT, he's not considered the closer... He's just feeling in until hopefully Brad Lidge gets his issues straightened out.

Chicago cubs.how good will they be this year??

RP = Relief Pitcher

So, you're almost fully correct. A Closer is a relief pitcher, but not all relievers are closers. The closer will end the game for team leading in the 8th or 9th inning, typically to earn a save. (you can find out how that is determined by searching in the Answered Questions section.)

Double play - what do the terms mean?

A RP is a relief pitcher, meaning anyone other than a starting pitcher SP. A closer is a RP, but a RP is not necessarily a closer.

In fantasy baseball closers are overrated in my opinion. The only stat that they give you that others don't is Saves. Plus, unless a certain closer is a stud and dominates the game (Rivera, Papelbon, Francisco Rodriguez, etc) there is a good chance they won't be closing at the end of the season.

So unless you can get a stud like those guys, than I would suggest getting a starting pitcher.

What-choo mean Willis? Did you read what Dontrelle Willis said of Jackie Robinson Day? All players wore # 42.?

No a relief pitcher (rp) is different then a closer. A closer usually comes in the ninth to get the save while a relief pitcher would come into the game in the sixth through eight inning.
