I wish I knew because it was one of the coolest things to see. I know a few relievers in the 1980's like Lee Smith thought they were embarassing and asked not to ride on the cart, plus the scenes of Eric Gagne running out of the bullpen would go away, but they could do it for the crappy middle relivers.
