First of all, the Cubs payroll is NOT $300 million. It's just over $100 million. They spent a total of $300 million in the offseason but that's for a span of multiple years (Example - Soriano's 8 year contract)

I'm not a baseball manager and I love Sweet Lou, however, I think he needs to start building some consistency in his line-up. First and foremost, if you want to keep Soriano in that lead-off spot, bat Pie second and keep him in centerfield.

The Cubs need to sign Zambrano now. He's a very emotional person and it's obvious that the contract situation is effecting his pitching. Sign him now!

Other than that, it's early in the season and I think they'll do just fine. They just need to gel together and the line-up will help.

As far as best first baseman is concerned, Ernie Banks played first for a number of years as well.

Holy Crap, it is only 20...TWENTY!... games into the season and all of my fellow Cubs fans are already packing it up and looking to next season. It's ridiculous. My God. I mean I know we say "Wait 'til next year!" Often but this is just ridiculous. How do we fix the Cubs? We ask this to ourselves and it is not even one month into the season. We have most of the building blocks for us, but we are missing one or two things. The main things that we are missing are:

1) An owner or group of owners to give the Cubs the money that they need to win a championship. Tribune is selling the Cubs at the end of this season, and while they have finally started to spend money, it has come to little to late. In my terms they are 300 million short and 18 years to late. In all actuality, while they have been putting asses in the seats, they haven't been putting a quality product on the field. Get a new owner who is looking for a championship, and we will be better off.

2) A quality outfielder. I'm sorry, I love Soriano, but he is a second baseman, not an outfielder. Get an outfielder who is decent or good, and switch to having Soriano to playing second. Or really mess with people, bring in A-Rod, have him play SS and move Soriano to second. Can we say the most dangerous infield in the history of the MLB? It will never happen (maybe?) but what should happen is bring in another outfielder and switch Soriano back to his comfort zone.

3) A quality closer. Ryan Dempster? Kerry Wood? Bob Howry? Neal Cotts? I rest my case.

4) A quality 3rd (or 4th) starter. I was kissing the screen of my TV when I found out that the Cubs didn't sign Gil Meche. My joy was short lived however, when i found out that the Cubs did sign Jason Marquis and Ted Lilly. While they have been doing well while in the Cubby Blue, a good 3rd starter is still required, or else the Cubs will live in the land of medioricity for another hundred years. Other then this, hopefully the Cubs will make it to the Playoffs this year, with a World Series trip not to far behind.

Here is how you fix the Cubs:
1) You have 5 right fielders. You need to pick one - and not have that be Jones. He has no arm, and is not a clutch hitter.
2) Theroit should be playing every day. He proved it already! And it should be at second.
3) You spent too much for a one year wonder (finger pointed at him too for "suspicion"). DeRosa is just average. He should not be above Theroit.
4) Stop the guests in the booth. This is for us who listen or watch. Do we really care about what crap the Fenwick girls basketball coach has to say about his season? It takes away from the game, especially since it is the 7th inning.
5) Soriano is not a leadoff hitter. Sorry - but he is not. That is why he has not broken out yet.
6) You have a shortstop who cannot hit MLB pitching. But you like his defense. You are stuck.
7) Your bullpen is getting old. Eyre, Howry, Dempster. They are showing signs already of being overused. And it is not going to get better.
8) Zambrano is good - but not great. He walks a lot, hits a lot of batters, and does not do good at all with pressure. Sure you should re-sign him (after the season!), but he is not the saviour.

it wont be easy to fix the cubs but it does start in the minor leagues. they have to get better coaching and personel to develope there young raw talent. Example: Corey Patterson, Gary Matthews Jr. Then they have to sell the team, fire the G.M. and attain players that dont have a me attitude, but a team attitude. As for Wood, he's only making like four million this year so he's really not eating up much money. As for mark grace he was a good singles hitter and stellar with the glove.
