Why are there very few black players in Major League Baseball?
Question:I think it is because young black men are simply not interested in the sport as they were in the past. The best athletes are playing basketball and football. I dont understand the controversy black leaders are trying to start up by saying there is a racist element involved in the decliening presense of the black athlete in MLB. Whats your opinion?

You think 127 millions will buy you victories?
There aren't as many baseball diamonds as there are basketball courts in the inner city. Also, basketball can be played with two people and a ball. Baseball takes a lot more people and equipment, thus making a pick-up game harder to start.I was unaware of complaints by black leaders. There certainly are no complaints among Hispanic leaders.
Baseball is truly equal opportunity as are all professional sports in the USA. If you can do the job, you get the job. The bottom line is money.
Should white leaders complain to the NBA or NFL about a disproportionate number of white players not at the top levels? Of course not, the better players are in the leagues and they happen to be black.

I should ask, "why are their no white americans in baseball anymore?"
Exposure of inner city youth has gone down. Electronics such as video games, ipods, etc seemto have replaced sports.
What number was Dave Kinman when he played with the Cubs?
There is an article by Gerald Earrly (sp?) in a magazine called 108 that suggest there is a proportional amount of blacks in MLB to the percentage of blacks in the population. There is a higher percentage of blacks in football and basketball, however. Its not racist at all. Or maybe it is, but more a sign of finances/economic issues. With basketball it doesn't take much to play - easy to put up a couple of hoops and a court. and doesn't take much to get a basketball. Football I am not that sure of, but I think you look at the more immediate success of players in football vs baseball and you might get your reasoniing behind the number of blacks in football.
Has anyone gotten a game winning SB by stealing home?
because they would rather play basketball, and football.Blacks tend to be faster too, so that really helps them in those sports.
saying they dont have the opportunity is a load of garbage. their highschools have both baseball and football programs, so if they are good enough, then they can play both.
and in the "inner city" down here in the tampa area there are more baseball fields then football fields.

I saw a show on t.v. where they interviewed the only 2 blacks on a high school team in Fla. The coach had to nearly beg them to try out for the team. The 2 players said that the biggest hurdle for them was being ridiculed by other black kids for playing a white sport. I know this is only part of the reason, but it explains a lot. What is the best slow pitch softball bat for someone 6ft 270?

what world are you living in. it is mostly black playersHow many times have Toronto Blue Jays players won the American League Rookie-of-the-year Award?
Ropar brings up a good point. Not only have black kids been gravitating towards football and basketball over the last 3 to 4 decades, but theres also the element of ridicule of black kids who DO want to play baseball by other black kids who perceive baseball as a sport for whites and Hispanics. Thats the biggest shame of all. It seems the "racist element" that prevents more black kids from playing baseball is coming from the black community itself.ESPN SPORTSCENTER!
Basketball and Football get more flash and attention on the highlights and so they are choosing to chase the flashy BIG contract and qick cash in those sports instead.
Also may help that Football and Basketball don't really have much of a minor league system like baseball does that can slow the progress to the highest level.
