Can you compare Ty cobb to Barry Bonds?...I say no?
I heard the moon was made of cheese.first of all, those people are idiots, ortiz is a great hitter by himself
when people say that he has manny there to "protect" him, it means that he will get better pitches to hit because manny is the next hitter...often teams are content to "pitch around" a team's slugger because the next hitter may not be as dangerous, and they will just pitch very conservatively to the slugger, often resulting in a walk...because manny is also a great hitter behind ortiz, they have to try to get ortiz out rather than just avoid him because manny can hurt them as well and all they will be doing is putting on another baserunner for him
How does the MLB luxury tax work?
The idea of protecting has to do with making pitchers throw you more fastballs, which are easier to crush. If Ortiz had some .190 hitter behind him in the order, anytime there are two outs (unless the bases are loaded, of course), the pitcher can pitch carefully to Ortiz and not be afraid of a walk--because he knows he'll get the next guy out and be out of the inning.Protection can also come from the hitter in front of you. If you are batting behind a fast runner, anytime the fast runner is on first base with nobody on second, he's a threat to steal. With a base stealing threat on first, pitchers will throw more fastballs because curve balls are harder for the catcher to handle and throw out a base stealer.
Do u think co co crisp is a huge disapointment?
Manny Ramirez for the last 10 years has been the A.L. Barry Bonds, and he has the reputation of being the best hitter (with power) in the A.L. You don't want him to hit period, and you definitely don't want him to hit with runners on because he's an RBI beast. That's why David Ortiz sees so many fastballs in the strike zone; pitchers would rather let him take his shot and they definitely don't want to walk him. Taking nothing from Ortiz because he's taking advantage of the opportunities, but it's probably why he's had so many big time hits.Does anyone have any 2007 upperdeck baseball card codes?
David Ortiz is an outstanding hitter, and so is Manny Ramirez, so pitchers have to play them differently than less dangerous hitters. When a guy has no lineup protection around him, such as Barry Bonds or Vlad Guerrero, pitchers can just go around them by walking them. But with Ortiz and Ramirez, you must face both of them and you cannot let up. This allows whoever is hitting first (usually Ortiz) to see better pitches and therefore get more hits. However, David Ortiz would still be a great hitter on any other team. Just having Manny and JD Drew behind him makes him more effectiveWhich Boston Red Sox leads the majors with 8 errors?
that is so not true!! big papy is good because he has spent hard hours practicing and get hit a homerun every now and then! How would you arrange this lineup?
If Ortiz has a good hitter batting behind him (Manny Ramirez, in this case), he'll see better pitches to hit... Think of it this way... If you have a guy hitting behind you, who can do just as much damage, the pitcher would rather not walk you and still have to face the other guy. That runs the risk of blowing the game wide open. So, instead of pitching around (walking) Ortiz, they'd rather have him hit...and minimize the damage... If they walk Ortiz, then have to pitch to Manny, still, the opposing team goes from the possibility of a solo homer by Ortiz to a potential 2 run shot by Ramirez. So, the long and short of it is, hitters will always get better pitches to hit with a good hitter batting behind them. (Pitchers don't want to walk one big gun to get to another.)
Hope this helps.
