Have the Yankees ever had a losing season?

Question:It seems like they win every year but still don't make a championship of it. When was the last season they didn't make the playoffs and had a losing season?

How far is Homer Bailey from the major leagues?

Also remember that until the advent of the playoffs, you only made the series if you won the pennant. So there are plenty of years they didn't make the playoffs. And also remember, even with the two expansions to the playoffs, you can still have a winning record, and even a great winning record, and not make the playoffs.

Not that the Yankees haven't won it a lot, but remember that they used to not have to get through any playoff series to get to the WS, and so simply winning the most games in the regular season gave you a 50/50 shot at winning it all. If you chart the frequency of the Yankees WS dominance, you'll notice a they have won very few post playoffs when compared to before the playoffs. The Yankees are great at winning tons of games and coming in first in their league and their division, but the playoffs have shown time and again that just having the best record isn't going to get you in the WS anymore. From 1903-1968, when winning your league got you in the series, the Yankees won 20 of the 65 fall classics (remember none in 04). Between 1969 and 1994 (the last year before the playoffs expanded to include the wild card), the Yankees won 2 of the 25 (again, no series b/c of the strike) championships, a drastic decline. Since 1995, they have won 4 out of 12, which is actually slightly better than their pre playoff rate, but remember they haven't won any of the last 6 (many of those being won by the wild card). So while 26 championships is impressive, remember only 6 of those have been won since 1969. That is still the most over that time span, but as you can see, not as dominant as far as titles are concerned. In that same timespan, Oakland is next closest w/ 4 and Cincy has 3. The Cards, Dodgers, Pirates, O's, Twins, Marlins, Jays, and Mets all have 2. The Red Sox, White Sox, Tigers, Braves, Angels, DBacks, Royals, and even the perenially futile Phillies have all won 1.

* Oh, and sgoldper...
They won more w/out the Boss, and weren't all 4 of their most recent ones when he wasn't allowed to do anything? As far as winning titles, Steinbrenner has been more of a pox than a blessing, at least by Yankee standards.

Well they are not doing so well this year they have lost 5 in a row. Maybe this will be the losing year for them.

The Greatest Yankee from my Generation (Don Mattingly) played on a lot of losing seasons. I remember watching the Yankee games in the last 80's early 90's and the stadium was empty. True Yankee fans will remember that.
