Who 'owns' the land Wrigley Field is on?
Question:I have read 2 conflicting reports; 1.) that the Tribune Company (and now Zell) "own" Wrigley Field; and 2.) Charles Weeghman, who originally built the park in 1914 for his Federal League team, purchased a 99-year lease on the property, which would expire in the year 2013. So, does any one know for sure? (No guessing or assuming please.)
Answers:
"The ballpark was originally named Weeghman Park for the Whales' club owner, Charles Weeghman, who obtained a 99-year lease on the property from the city."
There's nothing to indicate anywhere that the land is still not under the original 99 year lease.
So the Tribune company owns the Cubs, who hold the lease. And the city of Chicago owns the land and has granted the lease which will need to be renewed in 2013.
Satan bought the land in 1909, and God was pissed. He said there will be a century of fruitless baseball for the Cubs, maybe longer if I feel like it.
What are 10 facts/stats I need to know about the Boston Red Sox, if I want to be a fan?
