A save is awarded in the following situations:
1) The reliever comes in with his team up by 3 runs or less, and maintains the lead (If he came in when this was the case, they can pile runs on after)
2) The reliever comes in with the tying run on deck or at-bat, and maintains the lead (so he could come in and get a save up by 5, if the bases were loaded and he succeeded in stopping the rally
3) The reliever throws the last 3 innings of a game and keeps the lead (regardless of score)
