In baseball, what is the origin of the word "strike"?

Question:I was watching my beloved White Sox play last night and I began to wonder the origins of umpires saying "strike". Where does it come from?

It's roots go back to pre-baseball games like town ball and one o'cat. Baseball's first set of rules in 1839 described the responsibility of the batter to "strike" at the ball to put it into play. The batter was allowed a certain number of attempts to "strike" at the ball or be "called out on strikes" (just as today's batters are allowed three "strikes"). One of the umpire's responsibilities was to determine if the batter, if he did not hit the ball, had made an effort to strike the ball or not. To call "strike" meant just that, that the batter had struck at the ball and missed, using up one of his "strikes". Since there were no bases on balls in those days, there was no call for what would today be a "ball."
Incidentally, the practice of umpires raising an arm when calling a strike dates back to the 1880s in deference to William "Dummy" Hoy, baseball's first deaf major leaguer. Hoy, of course, could not hear called balls and strikes, so umpires of the time added the raised arm for his benefit.

What was Sam's on Cheer's baseball nickname when he played for the Red Sox?

I've heard a few reasons for this, but one is interesting.

When the game was starting out, there were no catchers. They just had a wall in behind. They drew an area on the wall where the batter should be able to hit the ball. If it struck inside the designated area, it was a Strike.

That's the only one I heard that made sense, it could have just been bullshit I was told by an old coach though.

Who the hell cares anyways? I was just happy the Tigers won!

Baseball player nicknames? For fun!?

Discovered by the German Umpires in 1904, they named it "Strike", which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

.I'm sorry, I was trying to impress you. I don't know what it means. I'll be honest, I don't think anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.
