Why do some MLB teams get a day off after opening day?
WHIP stands for Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched. Its a fairly new stat that they keep up with but it is a very important stat for pitchers b/c it includes every baserunner you put on per inning, the higher the WHIP chances are the worse you are gonna be.ERA - you figure it out by doing this formula: Take the ER (earned runs) given up and multiply that by the number of innings in a game (MLB is 9 innings, HS is only 7), then you take that total and divide it by the numbers of innings pitched.
Example: Say a pitcher gave up 3 ER in 5 IP yesterday, therefore his ERA would be found by doing this. 3 x 9 = 27 27/5 = 5.40 ERA.

When the Padres closer Trevor Hoffman used to be a shortstop...?
WHIP - Walks plus hits allowed per inning pitched.ERA is earned runs divided by innings pitched x 9 (innings in a game). ERA is the number of runs a pitcher gives up on average if he were to pitch a complete game. An earned run is the result of hits or walks, not runners reaching base on an error.
Whip is Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched. Just add all the walks and hits a pitch gives up and divide by the number of innings he pitched. Era is similar, but it is figured for the average number of runs given up per 9 innings. To figure it out, you take the total number of runs, divide by the number of innings and multiply that by 9.
ERA=9 times earned runs divided by innings pitched
walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP)

Heart of the Hide or Gold Glove?
see the first post it's right on the moneyWho is going to win the world series?
WHIP = Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched.ERA, average number of earned runs allowed for ever "game" pitched, is found by dividing total innings pitched by total earned runs then dividing that number INTO 9 ( or however many innings are in game at ur level )
so a pitcher gives up 50 earned runs in 187 innings
ERA = 187 /50 = 3.74
9/3.74 = 2.4
ERA = 2.40.

Why Did The Amazin Mets Shave Their Heads?
WHIP stands for walks,hits per inning pitched. It's a measured ratio of walks plus hits over innings pitched. For example, if a pitcher has pitched 200 innings, but gave up 80 walks and 180 hits, then his WHIP is:80 walks + 180 hits / 200 innings = 1.30
The lower the WHIP, the better.
ERA stands for Earned Run Average. It's a measured ratio of earned runs PER 9 innings pitched. Note that only earned runs count. Un-earned runs do not count. For example, a pitcher has pitched 200 innings and gave up 75 earned runs. His ERA would be:
75 earned runs / 200 innings = 0.375 earned runs per inning.
We then multiply 0.375 by 9 = 3.38. This means the pitcher gives up 3.38 earned runs PER 9 innings pitched. They choose to measure per 9 innings to better reflect how many earned runs a pitcher gives up per game (9 innings in a game).
The lower the ERA, the better.
Hope this helps.
