As the saying goes, once is blue moon (not Odum).Soil freezes from the top down, and if it's been below freezing for a few hours, they'd be playing on frozen soil. Cleats can't get a grip on that. Not to mention the fact that the umpires would be risking hypothermia.
You know, there is a reason for the more northern cities to have retractable roofed stadia. Since it opened June 5, 1989, there has been only 1 game cancelled at Skydome/Rogers Centre. That was because of piece of signage fell from the facing of the 3rd deck, and stadium ops needed the time to make certain that they both put that sign back and checked that all of the other ones were properly secured.
IN fact, the 1990 home opener was played when the exterior temperature was just about freezing and the winds were strong. That wasy a nasty, nasty day, and if the park had been outdoors, the game would have been postponed. In fact, as I type this (and I live in Toronto), it's -5C, with winds that make it feel like -14. For those of you whose governments don't believe in joining the rest of the world, that's 24 and 7. Oh, and with snow flurries. Yes, they're in Detroit, but that's only a few hours drive away, but today's game has already been cancelled due to the weather, with the make up game Sept 10.
LOL It wouldn't surprise me but in Chi-Town, where it could actually and has snowed in the start of May---if the players are anything like the Bears, they play in just about anything. But I have to my recent memory to be honest cannot remember if it has ever happened. Rain yes, lighting yes.

yea they have this rule that they would put water right where the grass and dirt meet together in the in field ans they would pour water onto it and they would count till 3 mins and if the grass was frozen or it the dirt clogged up into 1 piece they would call the game .the last time they did this was in 1964 idk what teams it happened toMore Questions & Answers...
