Baseball scorekeeping?

Question:How do you score this? Top of first, runners on 1st and 2nd, three-hole hitter clearing is bunting for base hit with drag bunt, but is thrown out at first and runners advance. I've always been told this is a "time at bat", but according to MLB Rule 10.8 Sacrifice, it sounds like it is a sacrifice even if he is bunting for a hit. This is because he must be bunting "exlusively for hit", but he was likely bunting also to move runners even though it was drag bunt. What is ruling?

Is asking your offense to score 16 runs for support asking a lot?

He was bunting for a hit, which can be done at any time and under any set of circumstances in any game. But bunting for a hit is ALWAYS an AB. The batter's stance is a dead giveaway of his intent, and it's the batter's intent and not the results that indicate AB as opposed to PA.

How do I calculate a pitcher's ERA?

It is a sacrifice, if he is out because he moved runners up, like you said.

How to know how many single a baseball player has hit?

As the official scorer, you have to determine if he was bunting for a hit. It is a judgement call.and you are the only one who can make it as the official scorer.

Now, as far as trying to move the runners up.that's a non issue. Every hitter is trying to move the runners. That's the object of the game, right? All you have to do is determine whether the batter was trying to get the hit or move the runners by giving himself up.

Take into consideration the score, the speed of the batter and the speed of the runners on base, the number of outs, and the defensive alignment.

What is your fav sport? and team...?

Simply put this is a sacrifice... With all due respect to the Eastern league scorer -moving the runners up is a major issue. If there was no on you can't have a sacrifice. If the runners were on 2nd and 3rd and did not try to advance on the bunt OR delayed going to Home and 3rd respectively and it is an "out" and thus not a sacrifice. But because the runners went immediately then the at-bat will correctly be called a sacrifice.

Does anyone know?

I think scorekeeping is in the eyes of the beholder. I would probably give a sacrifice because that's what ultimately happened. I mean a guy who tries to hit a homerun with a guy on third but hits it to the warning track gets a sacrifice fly- also not a time at bat. This play happens so infrequently I don't think it makes much of a difference. Good to see a fellow scorekeeper out there as this is a lost art.
