When were baseball players allowed to choose their own jersey numbers?

Question:I heard that players numbers used to be their batting position...Ruth #3...gehrig #4...etc. Was this only for the Yankees or for most teams? Was this just tradition or was it an MLB rule? When were players allowed to chose any number?

What do you really think about interleague play in baseball?

I have no idea on this one and don't want to look it up. But when players started getting paid to play would be my guess. Baseball players have always been notoriously superstitious and I would think that players starting demanding certain numbers for "luck" and as they switched teams or switched order the numbering system grew out of demand for everyone wanting the same number. So if you were number 3 and I just joined the team I might ask for number 30 instead. But like anything else in MLB, it most likely started because of money - to get a player and keep a player you had to comprise on uniform numbers.

Who is the best team in the MLB? Who will win the championship?

Before all the $$$$$$

The Pirates?

Yeah it use to be before baseball went all commercial and stuff but still a great game.

The St. Louis Cardinals.?

There really was no set period. Most teams assigned players their numbers and it gradually faded out as time went.

Players also were very superstitious in those days and kept their minor league number when the came up to the bigs.
