Question:When a pitcher comes into the game as a reliever, what does it mean if a pitcher has so many holds?

for example:

Innings pitched- 16 2/3
save opt.- 5/6
Holds- 3
strikes/BB- 16/8
ERA- .123

i know that my numbers prob. dont make any sense...but its just an expamle, so you understand what im asking.

A Hold is a fairly new statistic that was created to evaluated a reliever effectiveness, just like saves to a closer. Basically it means the pitcher ability to hold the team's lead, and it will be awarded only if:

1 - The pitcher enters the game in a save situation
2 - The pitcher records at least one out
3 - The pitcher doesn't pitch the last out
4 - When the pitcher leaves the game, his team still is leading the game

Note that a pitcher can either record a win, a save or a hold (or none of them obviously). Due to Holds are a most recent statistic, it is built to be more objective, because unlike Wins, a Hold is still awarded to the pitcher either the team losses its lead later in the game due to inefficiency of subsequents pitcher.
