How many major league ballparks have the dirt walkout to the mound?

Every position on the field has a numeric code, and every type of play has an alpha code. By combining the two, you can keep a scorecard that charts every part of the game.

I'm adding a link that will give you these basics, and a bit more as well. All of it will help you to learn more about baseball.

1985 baseball card?

It is a double play. a 4 5 3 double play is very rare though. The numbers stand for a position

1: Pitcher
2: Catcher
3: First baseman
4: Second baseman
5: Third baseman
6: Shortstop
7. Left fielder
8. Center fielder
9. Right fielder

So 4 5 3 would be a ground ball to the 2nd baseman than throw it to third base then throw the runner out at 1st. I have never seen one of these before. The most common is 6 4 3 or 4 6 3. I hope this solved your question.

Who sang anthem at red sox home opener today?

same as the above. This occurs when there are runners on first and second usually with no outs. The second baseman (4) throws the lead runner out at third, and then the third baseman (5) throws to first (3) to complete a double play. Now there are two outs with a runner on second instead of third, and they can end the inning with a force out at first. You would only do this on a hard ground ball, or one that carried the second baseman towards third, otherwise the 4-6-3 double play would be a safer bet at getting two outs.

Have the red sox become what they hated?

That is only the beginning young padawan. Decipher this:
FC5/DP.3XH(525);2XH(53436425)

fielders choice to third, double play: runner on third tagged out at home (third-catcher-third), runner on second tagged out at home as well in a rundown (third-first-second-first-shor...

Is papelbon nice at all?

The # are just abbreviations for the positions on the field.
1=pitcher
2=catcher
3=1 base
4=2 base
5=3 base
6=Short stop
7=Left Field
8=Center Field
9=Right Field
So when they say a 5-4-3 play it lets you know that it was an out that was from 3B to 2B to 1B

Is Andy Hargrove of the Wisconsin Timberrattlers related to Mike Hargrove of the Seattle Mariners?

each position on the baseball field has a number associated with it:

1 - pitcher
2 - catcher
3 - 1st baseman
4 - 2nd baseman
5 - 3rd baseman
6 - shortstop
7 - left fielder
8 - center fielder
9 - right fielder

so your 4 - 5 - 3 play means that your second baseman threw the ball to the third baseman who then threw it to the first baseman to record an out (or more).

this type of play is very unlikely unless the infield puts a barry bonds or david ortiz type shift where the first baseman, second baseman and shortstop are all on the side of the infield between 1st and 2nd base.

a more typical double play would be a 6 - 4 - 3 in which the shortstop throws the ball to the 2nd baseman who then throws the ball to the 1st baseman.

likewise, if the left fielder threw the ball to the shortstop who threw the ball to home to get a runner out going to home, that would be scored a 7 - 6 - 2.

there are infinite combinations, next time you watch a game try to pick up on when the announcers use this "scoring" method of reporting the play.

now you can tell what they mean when they say that it was a 6 - 3 put out (a throw from the shortstop to the 1st baseman to record an out)

Can any one tell me 10 facts about the Yankees?

As for the above postion numbers.. The reason they have numbers is for the official score book. There is not enough room to write player names in the book when recording what happened on each play so they use the position number in the score book to explain the play. The score keeper will write 1-3 in a play description for a batters turn at the plate, meaning Postion 1 fielded the ball and threw to positon 3 to record the out. Scorekeepers use different notations for unassisted plays, like F-9 means fly ball caught by position 9 or right fielder. Everyone knows what a K is, striKeout - But why K? it was just the first letter in the word that wasn't used to describe another part of the game...A backwards K means the batter struck out looking. Some other tricks are used in the official score book to help you go back and see as much detail about the game as you can from just reading a book of numbers and symbols.

Here are some tips -- get a score book one day and see how difficult it really is to keep up with a game and then go back and read exactly what happened in the game.

Is Jeff Conine the only player to have 2 stints on three teams?

The numbers represent positions

1 - Pitcher
2 - Catcher
3 - First base
4 -Second base
5 -Third base
6 -Shortstop
7 -Leftfield
8 -Centerfield
9 -Rightfield

If you see a 4-6-3 double play that means the second baseman gets the ball, throws it to the shortstop on second who then throws it to first
