How Many Do They Use?

Question:I've been playing and watching baseball most of my life and I have always been curious how many balls they go through in an average MLB game. Does anyone know?

I knew someone would ask this question one of these days and I would feel like my sleepless night watching ESPN 2 until 3am would not go to waste...It is 60-70 balls. It is difficult to get an exact number because each game can differ dramatically as the umpire can make a sole decision on when to replace a ball or take it out of play, just as a pitcher is allowed to request a new one for no reason. Then there are number of hits, catcher drops, foul balls etc.. pitcher walking off the mound with the ball in his glove after an inning. In general the ball is replaced everytime it hits the ground or an object.

I have heard the average baseball lasts three to four pitches. Seems really unlikely at first, but when you consider almost any ball that touches a bat or the dirt gets thrown in the batting practice bucket, it's reasonable.

Let's see if we have 9 innings with out a rain out, Take the home run, you might have three home runs, Foul balls avage say about 3-6 foul ball every third batter, scuff marks on the balls lets say 4-5 balls a new ball will come into play, a ball given to a fan in the stands lets 7 per game. I'm going to say i could be close with this 40 -60 base balls they might go through
