A save chance is any time a pitcher enters the game with the opportunity to record a save.

By rule a "save" is anytime a pitcher enters a game with the tying or winning run on-base in the last three innings and fails to let the other team score for the duration of the game or he comes in with a 3-run or fewer lead at the start of an inning. The pitcher who entered the game in a save situation must finish the rest of the game for it count as a save, otherwise it is considered an "hold."
