Well lets see...1. Jose Reyes- I'm sorry Damon fans, but Jose can out run, out hit and out field Johnny Damon any day of the week. Reyes steals bases hits for power as well as contact and walks. He is patient at the plate and has an OBA of over .430. With 25 steals already this season, he is on pace to break 100. I am confident that he will some day break hendersons record of 130.
2. Team Chemistry...The family atmosphere in the Mets club house is that of a close family. There are no bad apples. Each player plays his game while supporting his teammates. The mix of vetern leadership in the club house has been a large positive in that team.
3. Pitching...Althgouh it was a big queston mark in the beginning of the season, Glavine, Maine and Perez have shown that they can pitch. Glavine with 295 wins has changed his pitching style and has what it takes to break 300 this season. Maine and perez have shown that they are quality pitchers with the stuff that CY youngs are made of...My prediction is that they are the top two players for the CY Young award in the NL this year.
4. Willie Randolph... This guy knows how to manage. He is aggressive and plays to his players strengths. He shows confidence in all of his players which in turn leads to his players rewarding his decision.
5. The Bench... This is the best bench baseball has ever seen. With the exception of David Newhan, this bench could start and play an entire game and still put up a W. Chavez has shown his power and contact ability while also showing off his glove work. Carlos Gomez is a budding star with a bright future. Faster than Reyes the two of them will be a killer 1-2 punch and with Chavez and Beltran in the lineup these guys are better fit to run the olympic 4-Man relay.
Finally...Omar Minaya... Criticized for bringing in many latino Americans to try and make a team catered to the community this General manager has done the work that needed to be done. Again his showing confidence in players has been the big difference. He picked up Chavez, Easley and Valentin. He let go of Cliff Floyd and didn't chase after Zito. This is a GM that knows his role and does everything in his power to make this team better.
This team will own NY by the All-Star Break.
Oh and by the way about the 26 championship rings the Yankees have. How bout they shove it. The past doesn't matter, Yankee fans need to come to the realization that DiMaggio, Ruth, and Mattingly won't be taking the field any time soon. Yeah they were a good team..not any more so quit using your rings as an excuse!

Because their pitching is better, their players are younger, and they have players like Reyes who can do everything. Unlike the Yankees who are older, slower, and still doesn't have good pitching.

better players. that simple. better pitching staff even if its a makeshift one right now. and enough about the 26 word titles. i mean after all the yank's haven't won one in 7 years. and sure doesn't look like they'll be winning one any time this decade.its the curse of a rod!

The Mets are younger, have better pitching and overall better hitting. No one on the Mets will hit more than 40 home runs, but I bet 3 or 4 of them will drive more than 100 runs. Also, the Mets will probably have 3 guys with 14 or more wins. Unfortunately for the Yankees, they made some huge mistakes in signing Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano, and Jared Wright. Johnson because of his age and Pavano and Wright because they never proved anything. In addition, the Yankees and their fans should not see Roger Clemens as their savior. He will be 45 this month and only put up mediocre numbers in his Single-A start. For the Yankees to compete in the AL East, it will take atleast 3 or 4 years. They need to draft well and keep their prospects healthy.Will Dale Murphy ever make it to the Hall of Fame?
The Mets just happen to be having a great season. If we were basing the Mets and Yankees on their all-time team history, the Yankees would own the Metsthe yankees are better by history. but this year the mets are better. and it has to do with pitching. not younger or slower. cuz jeter can run ;like thief running from a cop. but yeah
