Here's a scenario: You're are on the home team and your team is down by 1 run or the game is tied. It's the bottom of the 9th inning. You're up at bat with a man on base. You hit a homerun and in turn, give your team the lead. Because it's the last possible inning of the game, there is no point to have your team continue batting and trying to extend the game. The game is over. Your team has won!In summary, a walk-off anything (homerun, double, etc...) is a game ending hit. Only the home team can techinically have a "walk-off" hit because the opposing team does not have another opportunity to bat. It can occur in the bottom of the 9th+ inning (i.e. bottom of the 9th, 10th, 11th or so on). The runs scored places your team ahead and gives you the win.
