well um, i single is only hit for enough for a runner to get to first base. a double is hit farther usually, as in a gap between the outfielders and the runner can take second. a triple is a ball hit well enough that the runner takes 3rd. and a homer is typically out of the park.
BUT, the difference in these types of hits is a scorers decision. sometimes a hit where the runner winds up on 2nd will be scored a single and a error.
