Chris Duncan OF For The St Louis Cardinals?
I don't know. To me (I'm an A's fan myself), the American League West is up in the air right now. The Angels have spent a ton of money, and the Rangers aren't all that far behind. But all four teams have good players, and how the season unfolds will depend heavily on which of those players suffer injuries and which have career years. The Mariners could have a horrible season and be fighting it out with the D-Rays in the basement, or they could have a career year from Ichiro and Beltre, bring up a couple of rookies who compete for Rookie of the Year, and have a Cy Young candidate in Hernandez. It would be a surprise if they won the West, but I think it's definitely possible. It wouldn't be a surprise like the D-Rays winning the East, or anything like that. Any team that wins the West other than the Angels this year is going to be a bit of an upset, but the Mariners have a chance to make it at this point. And isn't that the great thing about Opening Day? Everyone, even the teams that will finish in the bottom 5, has for a few fleeting days the feeling that if everything falls together, they could be a dream team. Like the Tigers last year. Who's to say it won't be the Mariners this year?
