Jack Robinsons Number 42?

Who is better The Atlanta Braves Or The New York Mets And Why?
When MLB retired Robinson's number 10 years ago, there was a handful of players wearing it. Each of them was allowed to continue to wear it for the length of their careers. Note that that was not for the length of that particular contract, but for the rest of their careers. All but two changed their numbers at that point. Mo Vaughn and Mariano Rivera, each of whom had specifically asked their teams for #42 from the beginning of their careers, in order to honour Robinson, kept wearing those numbers. Vaughn retired a few years ago, so that grandfather clause now applies only to Rivera.Rivera asked for it because he was not only honouring Robinson as the first modern black ballplayer, but as the man who opened baseball's doors to black players and to players from around the world. He wears it in recognition of the fact that without Robinson and Branch Rickey, Rivera himself might never have signed a professional contract.
Imagine MLB today with no Latino players and no Asian players. That's the difference that Robinson and Rickey made, and that's why Rivera honours that contribution by wearing Robinson's number.
What are you going to be doing when Barry Bonds breaks the record?
Because it was to honor him but i didnt even think Rivera wore that #Rivera wore 42 before it was retired, and was allowed to keep the number until he retires.
Rivera was wearing the number before MLB retired it. Therefore, he was allowed to keep it. Rivera will be the last player to wear 42 on a regular basis.
Can anyone tell me if there's a free baseball card price guide online somewhere?
Rivera originally wore that number when he entered the MLB in honor of Jackie Robinson. The MLB retired the number after Rivera began his career. Also, a lot of people wore that number on Sunday in honor of Jackie Robinson. What baseball position should i play?
because he had that number before jack robinson's number was retired, so he had a choice whether or not to keep that number and he did in honor of jackie robinson (he still has that number by the way)Big screen @ a game, how much does it cost to post something?
It is called a grandfather clause. Mariano Rivera and several other players wore the number 42 when they entered MLB service. When MLB decided to permanently retire the number 42 to honor Jackie Robinson, those who were wearing the number were given an exemption to wear that number until they retired. That is the grandfather clause.Nobody will ever wear it again, unless the tribute happens again on Jackie Robinson Day.
Mariano Rivera is the last of those grandfathered that is still wearing the number and playing baseball.

HE HAD THE NUMBER BEFORE MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL RETIRED THE NUMBER & HE WAS ALLOWED TO KEEP IT. RECENTLY THE YANKEES UNVEILED A MEMORIAL TO JACKIE ROBINSON IN MONUMENT PARK. WHEN MARIANO RIVERA RETIRES NO ONE ELSE IN BASEBALL WILL WHERE THAT NUMBER AGAIN.More Questions & Answers...
