Answers:

Wouldn't it be great if Bonds pursuit of "the record" completely overshadows Biggio's pursuit of his milestone

I think the answer you're looking for is Josh Gibson. He was a catcher for the Pittsburgh Crawfords and the Homestead Greys in the Negro Leagues from 1930 to 1946.

Depending on the source it's said that he hit anywhere between 800 and 900 homeruns in his career.

It's impossible to know how true this is because the Negro Leagues did not compile complete statistics or game summaries. So it's difficult to separate truth from myth in regards to Negro League stars like Gibson. His Baseball Hall of Fame plaque says he hit "almost 800" homers in his career, although the home runs are not recognized as Major League achievement, Gibson is still considered one of the greatest home run hitters of all time. He is credited with several outstanding seasons, 69 home runs in 1934 with a .467 average, and 55 home runs in 137 games in 1933. His lifetime batting average is said to be higher than .350, with other sources putting it as high as .384, the best in Negro League history.

According to the National Baseball Hall of Fame: "In recorded at-bats against big league pitching, Gibson batted .426"
