Error on a sacrifice bunt. Count as an "at bat"?
Question:Runner on first. Hitter squares to sacrifice bunt. Pitcher fields the bunt and throws into right field. Does this count as an "at bat" for the hitter? If first "at bat" in the game, is the hitter "0 for 1" or "0 for 0"?

Sacrifice rules are funny in baseball, or at least the way they are interpreted by the official scorers. I have seen players like Jose Reyes try to bunt for basehits but get credit for a sacrifice because the end result was the same. However, to answer your question: if the pitcher threw wild to first base it would be considered a sacrifice to get the runner to second and an error allowing the bunter to reach first base. The batter gave himself up for the team, the definition of a sacrifice. It is not the hitters fault that the pitcher could not make an accurate throw to the base to complete the sacrifice, therefore he is given credit for the sacrifice and an at-bat is not charged to him. This would be similar to a player getting a basehit and the ball being overthrown allowing him to go to second. The batter is given a hit and the fielder is charged with an error allowing him to move up a base. In the case of the sacrifice, the error is allowing the bunter to reach first base safely.
The first line of the link below does a decent job of describing the situation you posed.
What happened to Wilfredo Pujols?
It depends on which base the pitcher threw to. If he makes an errant throw to second base, the batter is 0 for 1 because without the error the sacrifice would have failed. If the pitcher makes a bad throw to first, then the sacrifice would be deemed successful and the batter would be 0 for 0. Since you said the hitter squared to bunt, this indicates that the batter intended to try to get the runner to second and not bunt for a base hit.Should I try- out for select softball?!?!?!?
The hitter is O-1 because it was an error, not a sacrifice. It would be a sacrifice if he had advanced the runner while being "sacrificed" and getting called out at first.Worst player in or being considered for the hall of fame?
errors, no matter what the situation is always and at bat and never count as a hit. so, the batter would be 0 for 1.How for is it from home plate and the pitcers mound?
Gatogordot is correct. If the player sacrifices and the throw is to first, it is a sacrifice regardless. If the throw is to second and the official scorer deems the runner would have been safe then it is also a sacrifice.Only if the scorer feels the runner would have been out at second with a good throw would the pitcher not get credit for the sacrifice and get charged an at-bat.
Of course if the scorer deems the pitcher would have beaten the throw at first it is a hit so the pitcher would get an at-bat in that situation as well.
an error is an error, it lowers the batter's batting average no matter what he did to put the ball in play. it's only a sac if the batter is out on the play.
