SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research ( http://www.sabr.org/ ), is a collective of die-hard baseball nerds who are always pursuing greater insight into the great game. (If you've ever heard of Bill James, he's unoffically considered the godfather of sabermetrics, if not the living rock star as well.) "Sabermetrics" the word is a melange, playing off the pronounced acroynm along with the area of most intensive study -- delving ever deeper into the stats to find out what we can learn about what shows baseball greatness and what are the keys to winning. The history of baseball provides us with this huge, vast sandpile of fun stuff called stats, and there are infinite ways in which these numbers can be massaged and crunched and mined and sifted. And that lets us reach supportable conclusions; as one example, we know that on-base percentage and slugging average correlate better to run-scoring than does batting average; and run-scoring (more being better) correlates to winning, so high-OBP and high-SLG guys will tend to do more for winning games than high-AVG guys will. It can get quite complex -- think of it as "drinking the ocean" -- but it can also be entertaining and insightful, and when we do find supportable conclusions, we can use them to form winning roster-building strategies (in fantasy baseball if one participates, in the real world if one is an actual team general manager). Answers are never absolute and without exceptions, but the indicative trends hold true. And we'll never know everything.
