I live in Chicago and have to say I love your answer!I hate the Cubs, it was always 'wait till next year' and they were always out of the pennant race by Memorial Day, so I switched sides and became a White Sox/AL and Brewers/NL fan.
So, to answer your question...
On March 27, 1902, the Chicago Daily News used the name "CUBS" for the first time in print. The nickname was coined when Frank Selee became the new manager of the Chicago National League Ball Club Inc. "Cubs" was derived from the new manager using young, unproven players to replace the veterans who had jumped to the American League for higher pay.
They originally were called the "Spuds" but it didn't appeal to the fans, so they thought of "White Stockings" but the other Chicago team (on the south side) took that name, so for awhile they were known as the "Orphans." (Really!)
A sports editor at the Daily News couldn't fit 'Spuds" or "Orphans" into his byline so he substituted "Cubs."
The club used the name on a on going basis from 1902-1906 and officially adopted the name in 1907.
It took a bit of research to find this answer especially being a Cub hater but I liked a challenge!
As a famous Chicagoan once said when referring to the Cubs..."Anyone can have a bad century!"
