How come sac fly isn't called RBI flyout? Why isn't RBI groundout called Sac Ground?
Question:If you have a sac fly, you're 0 for 0 with a RBI and your batting average would stay the same. If you have a RBI groundout, you're 0 for 1 with a RBI, but it would lower your average. So sac fly should be RBI flyout, because you should be 0 for 1 not 1 for 1.

the term SAC refers to sacrifice. you sacrificed your AB to get the runner in or move the runner along. AND the reason for the difference in a deep fly that gets a run in or a RBI ground out, (with the infield back, or in for that matter), is there is an implied offensive play in driving the ball deep enough to get runner home as opposed to fielders indifference on a ground out.lets say the infield is in a runner at 3rd. ground out will not score him unless it gets through and its a hit. you have to get him in with a sac fly. infield back grounder gets the run in on fielders indifference, almost.
RBI flyout implies batter did something so his batting avg reflects this.
How does this affect the yankees?
On a SAC fly the defense had no chance to get the runner outinstead of the hitter. On the ground ball the team always has the choice of trying to throw the runner out at the plate. Thar's why the AB.
The RBI is because an RBI must e awarded unless the hitters actions present an unearned run opportunity, or he hits into a double play. Thus, RBI's for: walking w/bases loaded, passed
balls etc. Contrary to popular belief, a passed ball is not an error on the catcher, nor are runs due to them unearned unless its a 3rd strike and allows a runner to reach base and a run scores with 2 outs (meaning the 3rd strike guy plus the other outs equal three at or before the runner scored)
I don't know where you get the "1 for" part at the end of your comment. That only happens if there's a clean hit.
The RBI groundout is called a fielder's choice. I agree with your thoughts, on that a sac-fly should count as an at-bat.

I've always wondered that myself: a sac fly should constitute an at-bat. But H.E.G. gave you the right answer. It's a question dealing with the fielder's choice.because a sacrifice doesn't always mean a runner scored. the runner just has to advance to 2nd or 3rd base (scoring position) to be considered a sac.
What ch. is the tigers playin' on dish network?
Semantics.Vin Scully, for example, does not use the term sac fly but calls that same play a scoring fly ball.
A sac fly is too deep for the defence to make a play, or to make a successful play. I put it that way because there are times that the OF'er will try to throw the runner out at the plate and the throw will be late or offline or the the catcher can't hang on to the ball.
With an RBI ground out, the defence has a play to make, and in some cases, can choose to try for the play at the plate. In that case, whether the runner scores or not, the batter runner reached on an fielder's choice, or is thrown out himself at first, on a return throw from the catcher.
Both, though, lower your on-base percentage.
