Have the Yankees ruined Major League Baseball?
Question:Many people think that since the Yankees can basically buy the World Series there's no point in supporting their local team anymore. If another team is doing well, fans also assume the Yankees will just go out and buy the talent to take over. Keep in mind that the Yankees raise more TV revenue than all other teams combined.
Don't Yankee fans want to see competitive teams? Don't they get bored of watching their team win year after year?
Would like your opinions on this. I've noticed even our sportscaster cover games with a huge amount of pessimism since we're in the same division of the Yankees.

The reason I'm as big of a baseball fan as I am is because I grew up watching the Minnesota Twins, who at the time had Kirby Puckett, Kent Hrbeck, and a chance to be competitive every year.If you're some kid growing up in Kansas City today whats your motivation to like baseball. The royals haven't had a single winning month in 4 years, and they haven't had a shot at the playoffs in about 14 years. Mean while the Chiefs are in the hunt for at least the nfl playoffs every year.
A salary cap in baseball(even a high one), would make baseball so much more interesting, and fun to watch on a year to year bases it's ridiculous, and while the yankees wouldn't make as much money. The whole league would make way way more, and that would be better for baseball.

I don't think they have. Even with the overspending they do every year, they have not won a World Series since 2001. The Yankees have guys sitting on the bench that would be starters on any other team. I can understand Steinbrenner and his desire to win, but like you said, "competitive teams".It does look like there is a light at the end of the tunnel, though. I am a die hard red sox fan and I dont believe that the yanks have ruined baseball for the fact they are not winning championships every year or even lately for that matter. They spend all that money but other teams are beating them with much smaller payrolls. Nothing makes me happier than to see teams like the D-rays show them up with their low budget team. You have to buy the players that fir into your team and need all the pieces. Other teams in the playoffs have proven that the Yankees payroll doesn't garauntee them a spot in the world series.Secondly, baseball has slowly become more and more competative with the emergence of the teams coming out of the AL central. So we do have some competative teams. Detroit, Minnesota, Chicago, and Cleveland could all push for the division title and or the wildcard.
A few years ago, the AL central was one of the weakest divisions in the league. The competative balance in the league is improving.

Although I think there should be a salary cap in baseball, the Yankees have not "ruined" the game. As much as I despise the fact that they have so much money to buy the best players off poorer teams, like my Oakland A's, it is funny that they still aren't winning every World Series. This year their starting rotation is weaker than many teams, especially their rival Boston's. I've already given a dissertation on this site as to why MLB needs to eliminate 8 teams for the long term health of the game. I even gave a version of it today so I'm not going to repeat myself.If you really love and support your team , then go up to management and say " I really love and support my team and to prove it I am willing to pay what Yankee fans pay for their seats. " I think it's a great idea, not likely to happen ,but a great idea .
