The only material difference is the fact that in the American League managers can and always do use a "designated hitter" in their lineup to bat for the pitcher whereas the National League requires the manager to bat each player who takes the field, including the pitcher. As a result, National League teams usually use sacrifice bunts more to advance runners around the bases. There are certain perceived differences in the way the games are played: American League teams rely more on power hitting on offense and pitchers throw more off-speed or breaking pitches than fastballs to keep hitters off balance. Whereas, National League teams like to use speed on the bases and sometimes hit-and-run to score their runs while pitchers throw more fastballs to get ahead in the count against the hitters. The American League has been considered the more talented league for at least the last 10 or 15 years.Y is Ichiro Suzukis first name but not last name on his jersey?
The NL was the first league to integrate as Jackie Robinson was the first African-American player to play major league baseball. He broke the color barrier in 1947 as a second baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The AL followed suit a few months later as Cleveland's Larry Doby became the first black player in that league. The primary difference between the AL and NL lies in the fact that the American League allows a designated hitter while the NL does not. A designated hitter (DH) is a player allowed to bat in place of the pitcher. As a result of using the DH, AL teams tend to average more runs than do NL teams as they have an additional solid batter in their lineup. AL pitchers never bat. The DH was introduced during the 1973 season. On April 6, 1973, to be exact, New York Yankee player Ron Blomberg became the first DH to ever bat in a major league game. In the NL, pitchers still bat and while they may not be good hitters, they are expected to be able to make an effective bunt when called upon.
During World Series play and inter-league play, where AL and NL teams play each other, the rules of the home team apply. For instance, if a game is held in an AL city like Boston, the DH rule is in effect and both teams are allowed to use a designated hitter. When games are held in NL stadiums, neither team is allowed a DH. Baseball purists would like to see the DH position done away with, but it is now entrenched in the AL and is unlikely to be pushed aside.
Detroit tigers how many wins 95?
in the al, they use the designated hitter, which in turn leads to more runs being scored because there are 9 true hitters in the lineup...also, in the al hitters are pitched differently, they are not attacked as often and as a result are able to draw more walks...finally, al hitters take a different approach, for the most part they show a lot of patience looking to draw a walk or find a mistake pitch they can drive for a home runin the nl, the pitcher hits, which makes only 8 true hitters in the lineup...as a result of this, the double switch comes into play, which allows manager a lot more freedom to use their bench and bullpen and really makes national league games more of a chess match...also, hitters are challenged by the pitchers, meaning less long at-bats and in general shorter games...finally, the hitters are more willing to swing away for the most part, and teams steal and bunt more, meaning less home runs and, again, more of a chess match
