Baltimore Orioles. What can be done?
Question:Have they been mathematically eliminated yet?
Would a new owner help?
I would love to see Cal buy The O's

Who really owns the baseball home run record for one season?
It's still very early, but from what I've seen out of the Orioles it's that when they win, they have the knack for the timely homerun.Examples: O's at New York last Sunday. Yankees take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Kevin Millar responds in the next inning with a 2 run homer. Later on, back-up catcher Paul Bako hits a 3-run homer that puts the Orioles ahead for good as they win 6-4.
KC at O's on Friday Night: O's up 4-1. Bases loaded, with Nick Markakis gets down 0-2, then works the count full before depositing a grandslam into the bleachers. Orioles win 8-1.
Saturday Night: utility infeilder Chris Gomez approuches the plate with the bases loaded and KC leading 4-2, and Gomez hits a grandslam. O's win 6-4.
And I'm just sighting the homeruns as an example of a team that demonstrates the knack for the hit in very timely situations. This team hitting wise has become more patient and selective at the plate this year than what I can remember seeing in seasons past.
On the other hand though, in a couple of games that they lost to Detroit, they've left loads of runners on base.
Pitching wise this ballclub as been solid. For the most part the starters have gone at least 6 innings. And the bullpen has done very well (with the exception of the Arod grandslam). So far the pitching aspect of the Orioles games has kept the club in the game most of the time.
Do I think a new owner would help? I think an owner that allows his baseball people to do their jobs would help. But the Orioles did spend very wisely in revamping their bullpen. And to be honest, this is really Mazzone's first full year with most of the Orioles pitchers (most of whom where in the world baseball classic last season), and look at how the pitching has turned out so far. It's early, but there have only been a few bad games.
I think it's really a bit early to speculate on what can be done about the O's. See where the Orioles are after the half-way point of the season. If they happen to be a surprise contender in the second half, then we as fans have seen inprovement in the ballclub.
Give me an owner that allows his franchise to grow and operate properly, regardless of weather it's Angelos or someone else. I'd love to see Cal get the team one day though. I think with his baseball expertise and passion for the Orioles and the game, he'd be a great fit.
I would also like to see "Baltimore" back on the road unis like a whole lot of other Baltimore Orioles fans.
O's stink
Ever since 200 which are the top 8 teams in the MLB?
they look surprisingly good. They may have the best pitching in the AL.In baseball, what does "striking out the side" mean?
Cal great ideaAre mlb fields smaller tody than they used to be?
orioles need to be aligned into another divisions.. with the yanks, sox , and blue jays.. really no chance to competethey have a very good team on paper, but they all get hot at different times so they get a guy or two on and then leave them on because the batters after them are in a slump. their pitching has been great (besides the twins series besides cabrera). their relievers have been great and the $42 million on bradford walker williamson and baez has been worth it. i think a new owner like cal would be great he'd go all out for the O's. i think they'll have a 76 win season. i love the O's.
most of their problems have something to do with peter angelos, but then again it was that way since he bought the team...i think the o's have the lineup to be competitive, but their pitching seems to fall short year after year...however, bedard is already a good starter, daniel cabrera has potential, and chris ray is already a very good closer, and their middle relief can keep it up long-term and they gain rotation depth they will eventually be able to compete with the titans of their division
Who is better justin verlander or carlos zambrano?
I know you probably think I'm crazy but I picked them to win the World Series in the beginning of the season. Every year there's a surprise team such as the tigers last year and the white sox the year before. I think this year is the orioles' year and I dont think anything has to be changed. Their pitching is underrated cuz i think bedard, loewen, and cabrera are all gonna have all star type years and their offense isnt bad w/guys like tejada and roberts and their bullpen is pretty good too. if the orioles still stay in contention, they could probably add a bat at the trade deadline and then they could win the world series.and no they're 6-6, they havenot been mathematically eliminated yet.
a new owner may help but let's see what they do this season first.
Can you sprain/break your wrist by hitting a softball?
Move to another division! In all seriousness, they are in a way mathematically out of it because it's all about money. As long as the Yankees are paying $200 million every year for a team, they can buy the best players at every position and are virtually guaranteed to buy the division every year (Anyone who says they win the divison every year because of Joe Torre or God or whatever is obviously a Yankee fan in denial). Add to that the Red Sox spending $140 million and you see where this is going - even the wild card is a long shot.
Major League Baseball today is like a game of gradeschool dodgeball where instead of picking captains and alternating picking players to insure some level of fairness we allow one team - the Yankees - to pick all of their players first and even steal the other teams' players in the middle of the game. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure who will win. Sure the other team might get a lucky throw in here and there but they have no real chance of winning - not over a 162 game season.
And what fun is it to be a fan if your team has no chance? Not much. It's reduced everyone to being hesitant fans of their own teams while rooting for whoever is playing the Yankees!
The best thing that could happen to the Orioles and every other team in the American League (and all of baseball) is for there to be a salary cap. That's why the NFL is the most popular and successful sport. Every team has at least a chance to win.
we have to get rid of peter angelos. unfortunately, he doesnt plan on going anywhere. everyone in baltimore other than peter angelos would love to see cal take the team. if it werent for peter angelos, our ace would be roy oswalt. he rejects the deal for oswalt, but oks a deal to trade bj surhoff in an all star year (28hr, 100+ rbi) for trinidad hubbard (who was released at the end of the year. he oks the signing of ramon hernandez, while we had javy lopez, but cant seem to bring a good starter to camden yards. with him around, you wonder how long we can hang on to guys like markakis and bedard. throw in the fact that he doesnt care at all about the fans (we went from the best attendance in the majors to the bottom 5 over the last 10 years), and you have the worlds worst owner
sakic fan, love your optomism, love your taste in hockey players and teams, but be realistic
Will Major League Baseball eventually use computers to call balls and strikes?
No one can possibly be mathmetically eliminated this early in the season. And nothing can be done about the Orioles until Angelos sells the team.
I'll have to disagree with Doc here. Bedard is the real deal, but the rest of these guys-Cabrera, Loewen, and Trachsel-just don't constitute a pennant winning rotation. Unless Loewen grows up into some kind of staff ace in a hurry, I don't see this bunch getting them into the post season. They're not bad, mind you-one more legit #2 type starter and one more impact player on the field should put them in the thick of things. They're just look a bit short for now.
