Is this interferance on the batter?
Question:My son is an 11 year old in a dizzy dean league.
Man on second breaks for third on the pitch thrown to the batter at home. Batter doesn't swing and catcher steps forward and attempts to throw the ball toward third base but the batter turn his back towards the catcher and slide up still in the box essentially blocking the catchers throw towards third. I approached the umpire for a rulling and he says the "it is the batters box and he has the right to be there". Is there an enterferance rule for this play or could the batter be allowed to impead the throwing motion of the catcher? Please provide a reference for this.

I would love to work in your league -- sounds like a circus every night. If the batter did anything intentionall to hinder the catcher's throw it is interference. If he takes the pitch and holds his position without moving whatsoever it is a legal play.
Official Rule 7.00 governs the batters actions -- I think it is 7.05 or 7.07 that covers interference.
Above answer nails it.
Add also though that if a runner is coming home (steal attempt) the batter must make an attempt to get out of the way. Interference then would result in the runner being called out (unless there were 2 outs, then the batter is out).

The box is owned by the batter as long as the batter stays in the same spot. It is the catchers problem to move around the batter.Have you ever caught a foul ball at a ballgame?
david nailed it but if i was ur catcher i would of throw it and if it hit the batter in the head it will teach him to move the next timeno there is no interference it is the batters box and he can do whatever in the box that he wants but if he steps out of the box and he interferes or gets hit with the ball that is interference. It is the catchers job to avoid the batter and you can teach your catchers to have a sort of drop step in there catching form so when they catch it they just slide behind the batter and throw.
