Why don't we add extra players if a baseball game goes into extra innings?

Question:Let's say you could add 3 extra players in extra innings. They could be shortstops, outfielders, whatever you prefer. This would add a lot of excitement to America's favorite pastime.

Will the Colorado Rockies ever be a great team in the next 5 years with their young and up-coming talent?

I know that game has been played the same way for 125 years, but it might be worthwhile to examine your proposal. The problem that I think you are trying to address is that baseball games that go to extra innings are not in themselves exciting. Extra innings games are relatively rare, and because they are close, the fact that one swing of the bat could decide the game is not enough to keep you interested.

I can see your point, somewhat. Its not that extra inning games are not exciting so much is that they complicate our lives. I have to work the next day, someone needs to go to school, the game is on the west coast and the next thing you know its 2am.3-4 extra innings can be an hour. There comes a time when the extra inning game is no longer exciting, but falls into the "Please, Lord, end it now" category.

The problem with your proposal is that it won't make the games end any faster with all those extra fielders if they are in the outfield. In addition, having extra players would make the game a little sloppy, as the extra shortstops bump into each other. The risk of injury would probably offset the added excitement of the extra players. No one wants to see players injured (this isn't the NHL), especially a prized shortstop or center fielder.

I think the opposite change. Instead of adding players, subtract one or two an inning...

I'm trying to figure out where these extra players would come from. If they are nearly good enough to play in the major leagues, but not quite good enough to dress every day, they will be in the minor leagues.

I suppose that if they asked me to come in from the bleachers for an at-bat, I would do that. I'll tell them that I'm a switch hitter. I'd get as many hits from the left as I would from the right - which is zero!

It would also add boredom in the fans in the stands because the game would never end. You add these fielders to take up more space in the field, and then the batters can't get a hit. Plus, those exciting catches you see would be gone because you'd have an in-between fielder to make those catches easily. If anything, it would take away excitement from the sport, not add to it.
