NEW YORK (May 18) - With the bunt sign on, Endy Chavez took a ball from Andy Pettitte . Then manager Willie Randolph signaled for Chavez to swing away, and the light-hitting New York Mets outfielder connected for his first home run of the year.
It's been that kind of season for the Mets - and Yankees .
Chavez also threw out Johnny Damon trying to stretch a game-opening hit to left into a double, and the Yankees' sputtering offense rarely threatened after that.
Oliver Perez (5-3) limited the Yankees to Hideki Matsui 's two-run homer in the fourth, another stellar start in a remarkable turnaround for a pitcher who went 3-13 in the regular season last year. After Matsui's homer, the Yankees didn't get a runner past first base.
"I know it means a lot to a lot of people," Chavez said. "I think they take it personal. It's special because it's like fighting for the city."
It's been a reversal of fortune for both teams in the Big Apple this season.
Coming off their first NL East title since 1988, the Mets (27-14) opened a two-game lead over second-place Atlanta . The Yankees (18-22), who have won nine straight AL East titles, fell 10 games behind division-leading Boston . The Yankees had not been double digits back in the division since they trailed the Red Sox by 10 games after play on Sept. 22, 1995, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Its not over already, but they better start figuring things out before its to late, there like 9 games behind boston right now, and the longer it takes them to figure things out and as long as the red sox do good, its going to be hard for the yankees to come back.No the Yankees have gotten off to slow starts before all that counts is where they will be in September. I mean Boston usually chokes the division lead during late summer anyway to the Yankees.

you cant count this team out that early men. Remember they did start off last season on a slump and then that got there self right out of it. So no dont count them out and so what if the mets are having a good season so far. Remember 2 last year they started off good for the season and went to down afterwards. Believe me when i say it or believe it or not the yankees will get back on a wining season i put money on it.Why is it that the Yankee fans think that they deserve respect from other fans?
I'm a Red Sox fan, but I can't say that we should stick a fork in them yet; because you never can tell what Steinbrenner will BUY and put on his plate.They do have some great players and it is way too early in the season to write them off.

Forks, knives, toothpicks, let's stick whatever's handy in them.And for those who are saying its early in the season, they've gotten off to slow starts before, they haven't been 10 games back at any point in a season in almost 12 years, and that was at the end. They're playing like they just don't care. If they can't get up for the Mets, what're they going to do when they have to play Boston next?

well, the past 3 or 4 years everyone says this at about this time of the season or by the all star break. and each year they somehow pull through. The Yankees are never done and you know that. You still have that bad feeling in your stomach that they will suddenly turn to Yankee form and take the division again (for the 10th straight year). If I remember correctly the red sox had a nice lead last year too until the yanks ate away at it until the massacre essentially gave them the division. Bottom line they are the Yankees and until they are mathematically out they are alive. no they are just in second place.i think that the yankees arent done for quite yet. despite the fact that the mets are sick and will probaly sweep. there are still more than 120 games left in the season, and rocket is joining the team. but they have a tough competitor leading the al east , it would be tough to come back. we will see what happens.
