Why does the NL Central have 6 teams while the AL West only has 4?
Question:Isn't it unfair for the NL Central teams to have to compete against 5 other teams for one playoff spot while AL West teams have to compete against only 3 other teams? Why don't they make it even?

Because when the Diamond Backs & the Devil Rays came into the league they did some shifting in the divisions. The Brewers were moved to the NL. The Tigers were moved from the AL East to the AL Central to make room for the D-Rays in the East.And being that the teams that are in the central division of the AL, are all midwest teams they didn't feel that they should put one of them in the AL West. I don't see why they couldn't have.
But that's why there is 6 teams in the NL Central and 4 in the AL West.

Because in order to make it even there would have to be at least 32 teams in the ML.If they kept it at 30 they would have to make inter-league play be season wide instead of just over a few random weeks or else there would be teams getting 3 days off at a time.
I do agree that it is a little unfair, but I also think it is unfair that every single team in the NL East can have a better record than every team in the NL West and yet the NL West still gets a team in the playoffs (it totally happened a few years ago).

In order to make it fair they would have to move one team from the NL to the AL. Then they would get into a big tiff about the Designated Hitter and all the garbage surrounding that situation. It's basically the player's union that created the quirks in this sport, but that is just baseball. Some may say that is what makes this game great. Every stadium is different, every division is different, and the leagues are different. The differences are interesting and create unique situations that we all get to talk about around the water cooler.Does anyone know who won the recent baseball series?
