It would be interesting to see what would happen if Japan and Cuba were to enter a team or two...may just have the Americans running scared in the not too distant future!!It's because there was a newspaper called 'The World' which started the sporting event which it sponsored. Hence 'The World' series. But the newspaper was around in the 1920's or thereabouts, I think.

Well maybe only one country participates but you have players from all over the world playing on each team.Because the concept was titled over 100 years ago when the Unites States was the only country in the world which played baseball and there were two distinct leagues (the National League and the American League). Hence, the team that won was the World Champion of baseball.
