Pitching on a mound gives the pitcher a little more room for the pitching stride (because his foot doesn't only move 3 feet or so forward, but also moves a feet or so downward), allowing for a longer stride, allowing the pitcher's weight to shift more forward than if he were pitching on flat ground. This weight shift allows him to generate more arm speed during the pitch, thus giving the ball a greater velocity when it reaches the plate. Will the Braves raise their payroll? From experience on both i can tell u that what the 1st guy said is all true. But one thing he forgot is the psychological part of it. When you are standing on the mound you feel more confident and in control. As a hitter you dont feel to good when a tall pitcher gets even taller on a mound. The hardest thing to do in sports is hit a baseball, it gets even harder when the pitcher gets on a mound.

In essence the mound is almost like a launching platform. I personally believe it matters most from the wind-up. If you go from the stretch, you might as well as throw off flat ground.I agree with all the other answers.
