Pitchers hitting?
Question:Why is it that I never see a baseball pitcher hitting? Do they choose not to hit, or are they not allowed due to the ability to get injured and not able to pitch?

People of Columbus, (and middle Ohio)?
In AL they have a designated hitter (DH) in replace for the pitcher's batter spot.In the NL pitchers are required to hit. Most bunt when there are runners on base.
Some pitchers are pretty good hitters.
Carlos Zambrano had like 7 homers last year.
Don't forget that Babe Ruth was originally a star pitcher for the Red Sox.
Also in interleague play, AL pitchers are required to bat if they are the visiting team against the NL team. The NL team can use a DH if the AL team is home.
Josh Hancock's Father is a bas*&^d?
In the NL the pitchers do hit. Some are very good hitters. The AL has the DH which lets a player hit instead of the pitcher. Usually the DH doesn't take the field.Carl Pavano... Why don't they Just Trade this idiot!?
national league pitchers do hit, but american league hitters don't. So your favorite team most be in the american leagueAs the season began who do you think will do best..?
All the teams in NL the picher will batAnd in the AL they have the DH. I don't like the DH it take's away from the game
Whats the best way to put a curve on your hat?
As pointed out, in the National League, the pitcher has a turn at bat. Even in the National League generally after about the 6th inning, unless the pitcher is just cruising, a pinch hitter will bat for the pitcher and a relief pitcher will take his place. Most relief pitchers in the National League rarely if ever (long extra inning games maybe) get a turn at bat. A few pitchers are decent hitters, but most are not and are called upon to sacrifice if they come to bat with fewer than 2 outs and a man on first or second.Your probably watching the AL, where instead of a pitcher hitting they have a designated hitter. Where as the NL, has the starting pitcher hit. Both leagues are runned differently as far as the DH and pitchers hitting.
Why do Americans talk about world series in baseball when nobody else plays this gay game?
The AL started the DH rule in 1972, this was basically a way to get older players to stay around a little longer. As well,.as to add more pop in lineups. Thus, more people in the seats, as many avg fans just like to see the home run ball. My team is in the american league, but NL style of baseball is how the game was meant to be played. Pitchers should hit, managers should always have to make more moves. I love this game, but we are getting it in the watered down state. Free agency, the DH, and expansion teams have really taken the game and the skill levels down a notch!More Questions & Answers...
