Their pen is worn out and a lot of those guys are unproven. this game has a playoff type of feel and they are playing as such. Torre saw Big Papi looming that inning and decided to use Pettite out of desperation. I actually like the move. Do whatever you can to avoid the sweep. I feelin general too much attention is paid to rest and pitch count and all that stuff nowadays. It was an old school move! He only pitched 9 pitches in total so it really shouldn't effect his next start... unless he's a total wuss.When was the last time the St. Louis Cardinals started the season 0-3?

This was Pettites throwing day. 2 days or so after a start you take a bullpen before the game. i guess they decided to use him in the game because they have a tired bullpen from all of the pitching they've been doing latelyThey were mostly desperate. Rookie starters that can't get through 5 good innings. It takes a pounding on the bullpen wears all of them down. Pettite still has a few days until his next start. Besides, pretty important game for bragging rights. They don't wanna get swept by the rivals.
