Question:I know there is a rule-of-thumb when it comes to this, but can't remember which side has the supposed advantage. If I had to guess I would say hitters have the early advantage, but I'm not sure.

Theoretically, pitchers are ahead of the hitters because the hitters haven't had a chance to see all their pitches. Some pitchers intentionally don't choose the same pitches during spring training that they would during the regular season. That way, they can catch the hitters off guard. The more times a batter faces a particular pitcher, the more chance he has to get the hang of the pitches, and which ones will be thrown in a given count. Of course if the pitcher is good he can still get the guy out, but he won't have as much of an advantage since the batter knows who he's dealing with.

In spring training they usually say pitchers are ahead of hitters because they arrive early and get some of the nerves and rust off before hitters arrive in camp. However, it takes less time for hitters to get ready for the season then pitchers so for the first week or so I'd say hitters have an advantage.
