First I might question your intial question. Some would say that baseball is a dying sport. As for me, I love the marathon season and the idea that one or two losses isn't that devastating. Several things. The sport itself has power, tension, one-on-one drama at every at bat, spectacular athleticism. The sport is a tradition. My father brought us to ball games. He went to ball games when he was a kid. Plus, each of us played little league and pick up sandlot games and can identify with professional ballplayers. It is that combination for me when I go to a ball game, even if I am visiting a new city and don't care which team wins.
