The Red Sox made a fair offer of 4 years/$42 million, that is $10.5 Million a year for a player entering the final 3rd of his career. Instead of being loyal he did the typical selfish, spoiled, arrogant ball player thing and opted to leave for a whopping $2.5 million more per season. He sold every Red Sox fan down the river for that extra 10 million when the guy already has more money than he could ever spend.

So much for loyalty.

From what I've heard, the Red Sox were expecting Damon to give them the right to match an offer, except his agent (Boras) overstated the Yankees offer (claiming they were offering $15m) and the Red Sox chose not to.

The money was not the issue for the FIRST couple of years of the deal, but the LAST couple of years, when Damon has gotten older and presumably slower.

It was a solid offer by the Yankees, who apparently decided they needed someone with recent World Series Championship experience in their outfield.
